Summary
After the US withdrew from Afghanistan, more than 100,000 people fled the country. Tens of thousands of Afghans came to the US within a matter of days, overwhelming traditional infrastructure meant to resettle refugees.
HIAS wanted to showcase the herculean effort everyday Americans were making to welcome Afghan refugees. This is the story of one Jewish community in Tulsa, Oklahoma that joined the HIAS Resettlement Network. Congregation B’nai Emunah, founded more than 100 years ago by refugees from Latvia, is the first synagogue to join the HIAS Resettlement Network in more than two decades.
