EXCLUSIVE: With disinformation and fake news hitting unprecedented heights in the lead-up to the U.S. presidential elections on November 5, Friedrich Moser’s documentary How To Build A Truth Engine makes for a timely watch.
Executive produced by George Clooney and Grant Heslov, the doc follows a crack-team of investigators from the fields of technology, journalism, folklore and neuroscience as they investigate the impact of disinformation and fake news on the human mind, and, consequentially, on humanity.
Deadline can reveal the first international trailer as the film rolls out internationally, following it world premiere as a work-in-progress at SXSW earlier this year.
How To Build A Truth Engine will make its European premiere in Vienna on October 13, followed by its UK debut at the Leeds International Film Festival on November 4, on the eve of the U.S. elections.
EP Clooney says: ““There’s never been a more important time to talk about disinformation. Friedrich walks us through this complex world in painstaking detail. It’s like a slow-moving train that everyone can see but no one can stop. At least this time we can’t say we weren’t warned.”
The doc is produced by Friedrich Moser Film in association with SIE Films, The Front Corner, SideXSide Studios and Rebel Entertainment.
“This film could not be more timely ahead of the U.S. elections, with disinformation and deep-fakes continuing to flood social media and our societies,” said Austrian documentarian Moser.
I think we really need to look into why we as humans are so prone to fall for falsehoods. This is exactly what the film reveals – a deeper understanding of our vulnerability, and what we can do about it,” he continued. “As one of my protagonists says in the film, if we lose a grip on the truth, we lose our civilisation. Losing that grip is closer than what most people think.”
